Tangle Tranzending Mandala - Layering Patterns to Create Texture

Create more texture and visual interest in your artwork by using layers - learn the Tranzending technique!

Whether you are a skilled tangler or a beginner in Zentangle, you will be able to benefit from this class by:

  • learning an interesting and specific Zentangle concept that features layered tangles
  • discovering different ways to use tranzending technique
  • learning which tangles work best as background tangles, an which are best used as focal tangles
  • practicing using color to enhance shapes and textures.

This class contains videos (total length 1h 6m) with unlimited access so you can view them whenever you want and draw at your own pace. You will also get a 14-page PDF printable booklet with tips, tricks and step-outs to finishing the project and drawing the tangles used in the project.

Tranzending is a concept developed by Zentangle Inc. The basic concept uses black ink pens in contrasting sizes, graphite shades and white pencil highlights to add layers. I've been using the concept with great joy, expanding it in the other direction, with the addition of color and white lines used in the background, as you'll be able to learn in the class. This class can be a wonderful foundation that you will be able to use to build your skills and provide new ideas.

You can search Instagram and Facebook using hashtag #zenlineatranzending to see the drawings I created using this amazing technique.

Supplies

This is the list of supplies I used to finish the project:

  • Paper - a tan (Renaissance) paper tile by Zentangle Inc. - a 3.5 inches square paper tile. You can use any paper or cut your own paper tile - I'd recommend using a high quality paper (this one is from Fabriano Tiepolo).
  • Graphite pencil for shading.
  • Black Micron PN pen (you can also use other thin back pen like 0.1-0.3 nib size liners).
  • White gel pen (Gelly Roll by Sakura) for line work and highlighting.
  • Black brush pen by Marvy Uchida to fill the borders with black ink  and a grey brush pen for additional shading (both are optional).
  • Watercolor pencils for coloring and shading (Albrecht Dürer by Faber-Castell).
  • Water brush for blending watercolors (by Sakura).
  • White charcoal pencil (by General Pencil) for highlighting.
  • Blending stumps for blending graphite and charcoal pencils.
These are only the suggested supplies but please feel free to use whatever you have available. Don't let the lack of supplies stop you - these projects can look amazing with other supplies too!

Sharon R.

Thank you for another great lesson Antica. I really enjoyed this look into Tranzending and hope to do some more tiles of my own.

Kim L.

This is an excellent class with calm teaching and a beautiful outcome.

Nancy D.

Take your time and really follow Anica's instructions because the end result is incredible!! I stopped the video from time to time because my tile was damp and I couldn't move straight on to the next step. Super happy with my tile. Thank you Anica!! I'll join you again soon.
